Finding Refuge in the Sacred Medicinals Balm Shelter

Sacred Medicinals CBD tincture captured in the wild

Miracle cures don’t exist, but it looks like CBD (cannabidiol) is trying for the title. I’ve been taking a tincture made by Sacred Medicinals whenever I feel anxious or frantic and it helps calm me down while staying clear-headed (a.k.a not high, since it doesn’t contain any psychoactive THC): perfect for parenting, family functions, and the day you decide to make a complex Argentinian pastry for dinner.

Sacred Medicinals is a Salt Spring-based family business. They make everything themselves from start to finish, from growing the plants to crafting the oils and topicals with natural ingredients, and have won awards for the genetic profiles of their strains. Products are sold online and also in the adorable Balm Shelter trailer near the entrance to the Ganges Marina. Surrounded by warm wood beams and thoughtful displays while the scent of Thieves Oil wafts through the air, they’ve made the experience of browsing just as chill as the merchandise.

I’m grateful to the super helpful and knowledgeable Balm Shelter staff for recently helping out my dad. He started suffering from painful tendonitis in the shoulder of his dominant arm and could barely raise it above his chest. When we visited, it was sad to see him struggle to do basic things like picking up his granddaughter. But the next day, I could immediately tell he was feeling better.

“It’s CBD oil,” he said, slightly shocked (my dad is not the herbal-wellness-crystal-healing type). “I asked the shop if they had anything for pain and they gave me a sample of oil to rub on my shoulder. It started to feel better within minutes.”

The sample was key; like most quality products, this shit isn’t cheap! If you need some extra relaxation during these anxious times or want to try something new for pain management, the Balm Shelter is worth a visit.
